Is Fiber glass insulation as cancer causing as asbestos?

As a carpenter, i find myself more times than not installing fiberglass insulation. In poorly ventilated areas and sometimes for up to 3-4 straight… 8 hrs a day, 5 days a week. They make me wear a dust mask but often times i wont use it because it makes the painful job even worse sometimes. Is this stuff as bad for your lungs as some people say?

Fiberglass can be an irritant but is not listed as a carcinogen. You should read the MSDS for the product you are using. Asbestos has a different length/thickness than fiberglass that causes the asbestos to lodge in the lungs.

Can someone put my mind at rest!?

I am so worried an annoyed. I have just bought a house to renovate, and yesterday my 2 boys aged 11 & 13 knocked down walls in the laundry. My dad tells me today that the fibro we knocked down more than likely contained asbestos. I am know freaking out, and am annoyed at myself for putting my kids in this dangerous environment. Does anyone know how much asbestos you have to be exposed to for it to do damage. I wasnt aware that fibro contained asbestos. I am so worried. Does it effect everyone that inhales it. Can someone please help so I can stop worrying myself sick.

First of all, until you get it checked for asbestos, GET OUT OF THERE.

The last I know of were supplies that were manifactured before 1991 by subsidiaries of a certain company. These ones contained asbestos. I don’t think they do anymore. It has been rectifed. Plastic cement is available as both gel (tube or gun form) and liquid (bottle with applicator).

Does vermiculite loose fill insulation contain asbestos and how can it be tested?

Discovered some vermiculite loose fill insulation. How can it be determined if it contains asbestos or not?

If the vermiculite was installed post 1979 then it probably has no asbestos in it, and before that it -probably- does. You can get confidential testing online from labs for a small fee by sending them about a Tablespoon sample in a double ziplock bag. I paid $35 about 5 years ago to have my popcorn ceiling tested but sorry, can’t remember the name of the lab, and now there are dozens.

Mesothelioma (What to exspect?)?

My Aunt was diagnosed with this about two months ago. The doctors have told our family it is inoperable. The symptoms she is having now is flluid buildup in her lungs which has to be removed about every 4 days. I wanted to know if anyone knows what to exspect from here. They will give her a kimo treatment in a few days, but I wonder if this will do any good. If anyone can tell me about how long someone with this lives once it gets to this stage. Rhonda, I am sorry to hear about your aunt. Unfortunately, we do not have an effective treatment for Mesothelioma. Chemo will not cure her if that is what you mean by do any good. They are most likely giving it to her hoping she will respond well and give her more time. Her oncologist will know when it’s time to call hospice. It will largely depend on her response to chemo, her overall health and how much assistance she needs. It is impossible for anyone to know how much time she has without having more information. It is best to ask her oncologist and even then it will only be an estimate. Keep in mind doctors usually give patients and their families information in small doses as telling them everything at once is too overwhelming. You and your aunt should keep a list of questions to ask the doctor at each appointment. Just write them down when you think of them. I hope this helps a little. Best of luck to both of you.

how do i get rid of artex on plaster board walls with little damage?

Is it possible to get rid of artex from plaster board walls with little damage? I live in a council property and accepted the house 11 years ago with artex halfway down every wall and on the ceiling in the livingroom. I have been told that I have to ask permission to remove it as it may cause damage and the council will charge me to plaster it. I cant afford to pay a plasterer to do it for me. It has already been tested and cleared of asbestos. The council wont remove it or plaster it for me and if i remove it and it causes damage they will charge me for replastering even although it was the tenant before me that put it up??????
Its definitely artex and on quite thick, have removed the dado rail which was placed just below the artex and already part of the plaster underneith has came away, I am going to try and remove some with the wallpaper steamer tomorrow n see how it goes, but hey ho if it does’nt work will just have to let the council do it n foot the bill.

There is a product on the market for plastering over it – ask in a good hardware shop – B&Q ? – it is meant to be used by amateurs – with a little care you can do it

The Effects of The World Trade Center Dust and Asbestos on New Yorkers

While the shock of the World Trade Center attack might be over for some, the World Trade Center Dust and asbestos make the events of that day the catalyst for a very real threat that more than ten thousand city workers and civilians who lived near the attack site are very much fighting with this very day.

A major problem that has surfaced after the cleanup in our day, can actually be traced back to the beginning of the construction of the Twin Towers in 1966. Many of the building materials used in the construction of the World Trade Center contained significant amounts of the very harmful substance called asbestos.

The inhalation of these very fine(microscopic) particle fibers can cause great illness, one of the main diseases associated with asbestos-exposure is a cancer called mesothelioma. This is why the World Trade Center dust and asbestos is of such a grave concern.

A fact sheet, produced by the New York Committee for Occupational Safety and Health puts it this way:

"Asbestos was a major material used in the construction of the World Trade Center. That asbestos is a constituent of the dust and debris."

An advisor was provided for the emergency workers at ground zero of the Trade Center, that advisor stated that the workers/volunteers should wear protective clothing and change out of those work clothes before leaving for their homes. Also stated, was that work clothes should be bagged at work and washed separately from other laundry to prevent asbestos contamination.

When you add in all of the disastrous chemical effects of the attack that day, it truly caused an epidemic. On top of all of that, the use and supply of respirator masks was not up to par. The question has been though, whose fault is the lack or misuse of respirator face masks? Immediately after the attack, respirators were not available early on and were not used consistently even when the face mask were available.

One of the issues with the respirator face masks is that the respirator masks require fit-testing and prior health clearance which is not often immediately available for disaster rescue workers. So who is to blame for this? Can anyone be truly blamed? Everyone has their own opinion on the matter. But one thing cannot be argued, the effects of the World Trade Center dust and asbestos are having a terrible effect on the heroes and citizens who were there.

The World Trade Center dust and asbestos has caused a condition that has become known as The WTC Cough Syndrome. This cough is the product of a poisonous concoction created by the disaster.

Pulverized building materials predominated in the initial time period after the collapse, while combustion-derived pollutants increased as rescue, recovery and cleanup progressed and continued. The fires at Ground Zero created toxic combustion products, such as dioxins, volatile organic compounds, and various other known carcinogenic compounds. Contaminants such as asbestos, silica, PCBs, hydrochloric acid and heavy metals were also found in the dust and ash resulting from the fallen Towers.

The World Trade Center Cough Syndrome (a chronic cough syndrome, thought to be a consequence of lower and upper respiratory disease typically including asthmatic bronchitis, gastroesophageal reflux, rhinosinusitis, or any combo of the 3 conditions) has been reported by a significant number of the people exposed. This type of chronic coughing is very much in line with a symptom of mesothelioma. Mesothelioma is considered to be a rare type of cancer with nearly 2,000 to 3,000 new cases reported each year. Mesothelioma is a slow killer, it can take anywhere from 15 to 50 years to make its presence known. In most cases of the disease it occurs in the lining of the victim's lungs, but it can also develop in the lining of the heart or abdomen.

After a long and drawn out battle in the courts, city officials in New York have agreed to pay up to $657,500,000 to thousands of New Yorkers who served as rescue and clean-up workers at the Ground Zero site of the horrible September 11th attacks.

Some workers are expected to receive payments of only a few thousand dollars, while others could be in line to receive more than a million, based on the severity of injuries. Lawyers for the city of New York had claimed it did its best to provide respiratory equipment for workers, such as respirator face masks and more and challenged some claims as being based on shaky and/or questionable medical evidence. There are 6 types of asbestos: crocidolite, amosite, anthophyllite, actinolite, chrysolite and tremolite.

The cells cannot tell you the difference between mesothelioma and another type of cancer.

This type of cancer attacks the lining of the tissues of the body's vital internal organs. The name of this disease originates from the main tissue that is affected, which is known as the mesothelium. The tumor from this disease can be either cancerous or benign.

Depending on how the cancer cells look under the microscope, mesothelioma is divided into three main types. The other types are known to carry a dimmer prognosis and a worse outlook more times than not, these two are the sarcomatoid and biphasic type. Nearly 20% to 36% of all cases are of this kind.

oh my god… contact your council they will send someone to remove it for you…..

asbestos is safe when its behind a solid surface like concrete but if its exposed do not go near it….. even air movement can create dust/ flake particles to become dislodged from it…. if these are inhaled they permanently damage your lungs … your lungs can not regenerate the parts that the particles have eaten away….

i used to work for the council and the asbestos officer gave me a long talk about it…. the longer it out in the open the more damage it will do

I am having a new furnace installed soon and when the consultant checked out my duct work he noticed asbestos tape on some of the ducts. He said before the installers come I should have Abatement (?) come and do it professionally, but is this something I can do safely on my own, and if so how do I go about doing it without releasing fibers into the air? Or is this strictly a professional problem I should consult someone on?

They are trained, are wearing protective suits, and have the equipment to remove it and take it away from the home since it is considered a bio hazard substance. In some states there are specific statutes that prevent anyone other than a professional to remove it from the home.

Asbestos has been widely used in many building products because of its tensile strength and chemical and thermal resistance.

However, asbestos is extremely hazardous to workers handling it and to others in the area when it gets into the air and is inhaled. Asbestos is a carcinogen that causes lung cancer and mesothelioma.

Because of this hazard, laws have been enacted to prevent asbestos exposures. They include these requirements:

Fines
State law specifies a minimum $250 per day fine for failure to obtain an asbestos report. This fine can be applied to both the contractor and building owner. Additional fines may be applied if workers are exposed to airborne asbestos.

* Building owners must have their buildings inspected for asbestos before construction, renovation and demolition activities.

* Construction contractors – Disturbing asbestos materials during construction is a serious hazard. Before bidding or starting any construction work, they must obtain a written asbestos report from the building owner or owner’s agent.

* Asbestos abatement (removal) contractors — anyone handling or removing asbestos in Washington
o Must be certified.
o Must also notify L&I of any asbestos abatement projects they are going to work on 10 days prior to starting. Notify L&I of your asbestos projects.

Sheetrock Asbestos

Does old Sheetrock sometimes contain Asbestos?

I have old sheetrock that is cracked and peices missing in the basement of my house, I am wondering if I should be concerned, I have read that some sheetrock did contain asbestos and I also read that sheetrock did not, that the compound holding the sheetrock together may have. These peices of sheetrock are not compounded nor are they plastered they are only nailed in.

Sheetrock (aka drywall) is just compressed gypsum with paper covering it. I’ve never heard of any that had asbestos. Asbestos was usually used in insulation and roofing materials. Plus, even if there were asbestos, the way to get rid of it is not to tear it out, since that just puts it out into the air. Instead, you need to encapsulate it. All that means is paint over it, and you’ll be fine.

Most of the minerals on your list can be many colours, the different colours caused by different impurities in them.

For example, quartz can be a wide range of colours, and 2 others on your list, amethyst and citrine, are both types of quartz. Both get their colour from iron, and if amethyst is heated it becomes citrine.

Beryl is another gem that can be various colours. Green beryl is emerald and gets its colour from chromium. Aquamarine is pale blue beryl and gets its colour from iron. Morganite is pink beryl and gets its colour from manganese.

Silver and gold are both elements, so they’re that colour because that’s how they reflect the light.

Trilobites are a type of fossil so their colour will depend on what rock they are in.

If you google them you should be able to find out which elements cause the different forms of each mineral, or look on wikipedia.

I am wanting to remove asbestos tile from my slap floor, how do i remove the petroleum based adhesive?

If is cracked and broke up you need to have it a abated . $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$

If it is chipping and flaking get it real damp and use latex type gloves clean it up and put it in zip lock bags along with any thing that you used to clean it up including the gloves. Wear a good respirator. When done wet the filters in the respirator and remove them and put then in the bags too, then us a damp rag and clean the respiratory..

If it is flat and and is just ugly. Buy a good sealer and seal the floor, then install a wall to wall rug or free floating floor over it.

Vinyl Floor Tiles Asbestos

Subfloor in kitchen..layers..asbestos?

house was built in 1965.
from looking at a side view of the floor in the kitchen i see the following layers working from the top down..

linoleum
linoleum
plywood
black-foam-like substance
vinyl tile
black stuff
plywood

my question is on the black-foam-like substance. it is NOT hard like a dried mastic. it is actually rubbery in feeling. could this just be a soft underlayment put down in order to put the plywood on top and then the linoleum floor?

was there ever a rubbery like material that contained asbestos in the subfloor?

Not that I have ever heard of. I would however recommend wearing a respirator in for a few bucks you can get a Tyvek suit that will cover you from head to toe and if you’re careful and bag up everything as you go and vacuum well, you should be okay even if there is some. Don’t forget the goggles and gloves.

Before any tampon is marketed in the U.S., FDA reviews its design and materials. Asbestos is not an ingredient in any U.S. brand of tampon, nor is it associated with the fibers used in making tampons. Moreover, tampon manufacturing sites are subject to inspection by FDA to assure that good manufacturing practices are being followed. Therefore, these inspections would likely identify any procedures that would expose tampons products to asbestos. If any tampon product was contaminated with asbestos, it would be as a result of tampering, which is a crime. Thus far, FDA has received no reports of tampering. Anyone having knowledge of tampon tampering is urged to notify FDA or a law enforcement officer.
